Students not entrepreneurs

And that's what's wrong with the Dutch innovation climate...

Only 2 out of 10 Dutch Students is thinking about starting his/her own business. In the USA that's 6 out of 10. This according to professor Henk Volberda of RSM (Rotterdam School of Management, part of the Erasmus University).

Loek Hermans of MKB thinks the government should make working less attractive, that way becoming an entrepreneur will become more attractive. Seldom have I read such a stupid comment.

First of all the schools should start TEACHING about entrepreneurship. Second the government should make it easier to be an entrepreneur. Not the negative route, just take the positive one.

  • The Netherlands may be degrading in relation to the rest of the world on the topic of entrepreneurs, but we still provide world class companies/information etc. We may not have alot of new businesses sprouting from the ground, but when we creat some thing big, it's always big.
There are alot of differences between the US and NL, geographically and economically. I believe that even though alot of people in the US think big entrepreneur wise, many don't get this far. Ever heard of the story:

The fox knows many things, but the hedgehog knows one big thing.

The fox is the US, NL is the hedgehog in my opinion.

The next question is of course, which environment is beter for entrepreneurship: a poor, risky and loose enviroment which causes people to become desparate and driven to reach a goal.[US]
Or a rich, steady, yet productive environment in which idea sprout only when we are SURE that they will work.

In my opinion we need to build an environment which a mutant... the hedgox / foxhog. The ideal environment in which people will be open towards risk taking, yet remain stable. We need to some how simulate businesses, and analyse fast and accurately whether something is a success. Just Do It, Safely...

  • Entrepreneurs are simply those who understand that there is little difference between obstacle and opportunity and are able to turn both to their advantage.
