This is the difference between Europe and the US: I got an email of one of my (16.500) contacts in Linkedin this morning: Steve Sammons asking to help out his step-son Erik Mendoza to raise money for a European Basketball tournament he wants to attend: Steve and his wife insisted that he come up with a concept that would require him to provide a product for profit, versus just asking his relatives for a handout. Thus far it has worked very well and Erik is very close to achieving his goal. This is the game called "Rodeo golf"that he invented, and here's a couple of videos to explain it even better. Erik sold 170 of the 200 units he made and now needs to sell the last 30 units of this back-yard-game to hit is target. You can buy one of the last units here . But hurry folks they are now in hot demand! His website is also pretty damn cool and fairly innovative for a fourteen-year-old! Way to go Erik ! Have fun in Europe!

European VC investments picking up!

2006 finally beat the €4 billion mark after having flirted with it for three consecutive years. Total VC investments in European and Israeli technology companies reached €4.7 billion!! the largest amount raised in a single year since 2002. The upswing continued in the first quarter of 2007, which led to levels of activity unmatched in the past years.

The Tornado Insider Research Online Data counter for Q1 2007 stands at 286 deals. You have to go back to Q3 2001 to find more investments in a single quarter. January recorded most deals in the quarter: 113. This is the second highest monthly number since September 2001 - 104 deals were reported in March 2004. The total amount of funding raised in Q1 reached €1.59 billion. The last time quarterly investment surpassed the €1.5 billion mark was Q1 2002.

Ideabroker fully supports the Dutch version of Dragons Den "the put your money where your mouth" is Pitch program. Hosted in Holland by Jort Kelder who's whitty sharpness and feel for people is always on the dot. Dragon's are: Henk Keilman made his fortune with selling US telco MTC, Annemarie van Gaal who made her fortune with publisher Independent Media in Russia!, Jan Pieter Melchior who got rich thru a buy-out from Dutch Lostboys and investing in Telfort, Willem Sijthof who's coming from a publisher family and owns both local and Norwegean media and Arjen de Koning who founded Paradigit a computer retailer in Holland. The show airs every Friday on Dutch channel Nederland 3 at 20.25 hrs. Potential Dutch pitchers and entrepreneurs should watch this show or it's UK mother show to learn from others mistakes.

Prepare well, use the mother-in-law test, (if she gets it, you'll stand a much better chance at the dragons!) have your figures sorted out and present your concepts short and snappy are the main tips you can take with you from these shows.

These are excellent initiatives for entrepreneurship and innovation and above all entertaining shows to watch!

Ideabroker @ Holland Innovation

Last Wednesday, we had a stand at the Holland Innovation event in Utrecht. Thanks to Nils de Witte from NEBIB, who co-organized the event together with the Novu. In former years the Dutch patent office was one of the organizers, which might explain why we had a few business weary inventors visit our stand, who'd rather stay in their shed perfecting their perpetuum mobile for the rest of their lives, than become a darned entrepreneur (yes, some where actually angry at us for even suggesting such a perversion). Guys, it's not the idea but the execution of that idea that is important..Just do it! Luckily, we had excellent help from two winners from our last pitch competition, Marlies de Gooijer from Rippoff and Martinette Boonekamp from M4Office, as well as our own intern Quim Ramos. We were again able to make some interesting contacts. Cor de Vries of Puresta showed us some interesting water purification and water savings solutions, especially for those areas were clean water is scarce. We shared a booth with Jeroen Bakker of Paragin (Dutch site), who make Internet applications for e-learning, e-mail marketing, knowledge management and mobile. A couple of booths further down the alley was René Jansen of Winkwaves, who pitched at Ideabrokers at the Entrepreneurs Festival in The Hague a few weeks earlier. Jeroen and René have different solutions for comparable products, so they could exchange some ideas. Justus Slaakweg of Nonex Design designs interiors to support brands and companies. Judging by their portfolio and the current 'hotness' of Dutch Design, we think Nonex has a great proposition. Mieke de Jong runs Outbox, a hub of localized City blogs supported by local advertizing. With user generated content, local context and a sustainable business model, she can't go wrong! Pieter van der Meer of Gilde Healthcare is looking for investment opportunities, so we introduced him to Ton Veldhuis, who has developed a data mining technique that can drastically reduce costs of clinical trials for new drugs. Finally, we met Rob Maes, who wants to slow things down. Slow down traffic, that is, with his portable traffic calming solution. So, another succesful event for Ideabroker. On to the next...

Another inspiring Ideabroker session

On a hot summer's night, in the Caballero Factory in Den Haag (The Hague), the air again was heavy with inspiring ideas. Presenter Jan Karel Kleijn taunted, teased and encouraged the pitchers, who were judged by Remco van Kapel, Edgar Neo, Bob Stumpel and Richard Kranendonk. First off the bat was René Jansen from Winkwaves. Winkwaves makes an online platform for knowledge sharing in which collective intelligence (based on the click and bookmark behaviour of an organisation's co-workers and domain experts) plays a central role. This platform is offered to knowledge intensive organisations. A public version can be found here (in Dutch). Winkwaves already scored 6 customers, but is looking for more. Resellers are welcome too.
Karin Loeffen from Libersy (formerly Justbookit) presented an online community for appointment management for professionals. Karin is negotiating with several investors, but there's always room for more. She's looking for third parties who want to integrate Libersy in their website as a white label solution.
Next was Marlies de Gooijer from Rippoff. Rippoff is an anti-brand. Rippoff is irony. Under the Rippoff concept Marlies offers anti-fashion and accesories. Besides a beautiful slideshow she also brought some examples of her Rotterdam line. She even tried to bribe president of the jury Bob Stumpel with a tight pink t-shirt. Marlies is looking for people with knowledge about procurement in the fashion branche, and access to sales channels.
Jeroen Naeff from TalkTo can help companies make the optimal mix between VOIP (Voice over IP) and mobile telephony. Companies can save costs by using their mobile phone over their wireless network. Jeroen wants customers and resellers.
Ferdy Blaset from Gamica.com is a publisher of mobile games. They're a Nokia preferred supplier for connected multi-player games, and have a license for the fruit machine game developed for Bell-Fruit. Ferdy is looking for distribution partners and serious VC money to fund their European marketing.
Ferdy Santoo from TopParagon showed his cool 'freemiums', free items that people actually would want to have. They are importer for iTech and hold a license for the Beijing Olympic Games in 2008. Ferdy demonstrated a virtual keyboard that can be projected on any flat surface using a laser beam and a Bluetooth speaker system that goes silent as soon as your mobile phone gets an incoming call. TopParagon would like more clients for their personal electronics line.
Ferdy was followed by Niels Jensen from KaosPilots.nl. KaosPilots, from Danish origin, is an "international school of new business design and social innovation". KaosPilots goal is establishing a value based educational programme in 10 countries. There are already schools in Aarhus (Denmark) and Oslo (Norway). Next on the list is Utrecht (The Netherlands, 2007), London, Toronto and San Francisco. In The Netherlands Niels is partnering with top educational institute De Baak. Niels wants students, tutors and ambassadors.
Jan Timmerhuis from the Niagara Waterfall Company helps individuals and organisations with conceptualization, out-of-the-box creative thinking, and moving beyond traditional thought patterns.
After many years as a board secretary and office manager on other people's payrolls, Martinette Boonekamp started M4Office (in Dutch). Martinette offers all facilitating services for offices, like managing the move to a new location, setting up an archive, or improving processes of secretarial (and other supporting) departments. Martinette wants more customers.
The Verdict: after careful consideration the third prize went to Martinette of M4Office. She had a clear proposition and a well defined product that covers a concrete need for starters as well as large companies. Her presentation was personal and enthusiastic. Runner up was Ferdy Blaset from Gamica.com. Gamica could become an international player in the mobile games market. The jury advised Ferdy to choose a better defined position in the value chain: developer, license holder, publisher, or something entirely different. Winner was Marlies de Gooijer from Rippoff. With a presentation from the heart, a fine nose for contemporary graphic design and exactly the right ironic stance versus 'fashion', she showed Rippoff has great potential. If only she can muster the courage to focus on this one terrific idea...
Follow up: As usual, before the event had even finished, valuable contacts were made and potential partnerships were discussed. And of course we will use our Ideabroker network to help our young heroes wherever possible. In a few months we will update you on the progress of their enterprises.

An idea: Offline Music Petrol Station

Hi all, an idea just popped up. Here it goes...An offline music petrol station is basically a facility (placed either in shopping malls, parks, etc) that allows people to easily fill their MP3 players or ipods. In order to use this device, people will need to purchase a special chip, which they would slot into the music petrol station each time they need to refill their music players. After they have inserted the chip into the device, a list of songs would appear and all they need to do is to select their favourite songs, and these songs will automatically be transferred into their music players.

3 parties are involved in the whole process and they are:

1) Music artists - refers to vocalists, musicians or composers, i.e; those who are directly or indirectly involved in the production of songs in the playlist.

2) Music Petrol Station Vendors - refers to businesspeople/entrepreneurs who purchase and own the music petrol station and provide the facility as one of their product offerings to music buffs. Chips are sold to music buffs by vendors.

3) Music buffs - refers to people who purchase chips from vendors and download music directly from the music petrol station. Music buffs can also custom-made and purchase their music petrol station from the vendor.

How it works:

1) Artists allow their songs to be included in the playlist inside the music petrol station.

2) Vendors sell a special chip to music buffs so music buffs could download songs from the music petrol station. A chip will no longer be valid if downloads exceed a specified limit, say 15,000 songs, therefore music buffs would need to purchase a new chip to continue using the music petrol station.

3) Artists get a percentage from all sales of chips and downloads.

4) Songs are included, on a per-request basis by vendors or as in when an agreement is made between an artist and a vendor.

How the music petrol station looks like:

1) A normal vending machine, except chips are inserted to use the facility instead of coins. The music petrol station can be placed anywhere where the vendor deems appropriate.

2) Custom-made according to the preference of music buffs. In this case, the music petrol station will most likely be a collector's item and is placed in the homes of music buffs. Songs can be added by purchasing a new chip from the vendor once the current chip exceeds the download limit.

No Money...Less Lazy!

Every year everyone should live a week without access to a bankaccount.

Source of inspiration: my uncle (98 years old). He just came back from Paris...(he is still healthy..thank god!)...anyway, on a particular day he left his hotel in the morning for a day in the town...on his way he noticed he forgot his wallet...well...he had about 2 euro's on him. He decided to walk on....the whole day he drank water, walked, sat on benches, didn't accept money from friends etc...even the hotel offered to pay for the cab etc...he spent a day in the beautiful city of Paris and 'saw' stuff he never had seen before...

We should learn to 'see' again. Money makes us lazy.

It even gets better...after some hours he ended up in a street he always visits when in Paris....his favorite cafe on a corner...he sat down...and thought ... 2 euros...1 drink (borrel - Dutch for something a bit stronger than water;) would be possible...when he saw the menu...he almost fainted...at that moment he learnt the value of money (again)....being an entrepreneur for approx 65 years of his life...he should have noticed pricing mutations ...but no.

Reality...we get lazy! cu JB

Re-innovation

A good friend of mine collects old Wired mag's, not for the fun of it, but because he scans them for old idea's that are still valid but never made it due to various reasons: to early, not executed well enough, bad marketing, the .com bust etc.

Most of us lack the ability to recognize a promising innovator or idea. Typically, we're seers only in hindsight, lamenting how we knew eight years ago that Google would revolutionize search and forgetting how we dismissed successful product introductions. Academics and analysts have some ideas about what works best;

Admit that most things fail: This is not a bad thing. Not even a surprising thing. It is just the way the world operates. And those who do not realize this are more doomed to failure than those who do.

That's the observation of Paul Ormerod, author Why Most Things Fail, and an advocate of continuous, aggressive innovation. In the history of industry most businesses eventually fail, even market leaders. Although they don't fall apart for the same reasons, certain patterns of behavior contribute to the likelihood of failure.

"What you should be looking for is not the amount of money they're spending on research and development themselves, but a company's willingness to be flexible and to adapt to what other people are doing well,"

Specialize, specialize, specialize: Sir Isaac Newton once famously wrote, by way of explaining his extraordinary legacy of discoveries, that "If I have seen further, it is by standing upon the shoulders of giants."

"If one is to stand on the shoulders of giants, one must first climb up their backs, and the greater the body of knowledge, the harder this climb becomes," writes Benjamin Jones, a professor at the Kellogg School of Management, in a paper that addresses the complexities of innovation. (.pdf)

Jones' analysis adresses two changes in the way people and institutions pursue innovation.

The first is a trend toward specialization. In order to improve existing technologies, researchers must either pursue an increasingly extensive education or narrow their field of expertise.

Jones also envisions a trend toward teamwork gaining momentum, as companies need more people to complete projects.

"Whenever researchers look at innovation, they see this upward trend in collaboration," he said. "People are becoming more specialized over time and they need to work in bigger teams."

That's the view of Eric von Hippel, a professor at MIT's Sloan School of Management, who says technologies can be developed in such a way that innovations are easier to make. The basic idea is to break complex systems into simpler "modules." A product can be improved upon by focusing not on the whole, but on a small part.

"Existing technology gets gradually shaped into large user-friendly chunks that you don't need to know the insides of to use," he said. "You can work with an operating system without knowing everything about how it works. And you can modify a car without necessarily understanding how the engine works."

As for corporate R&D, von Hippel says companies are finding that more and more innovation is coming not from in-house developers, but from products users who do their own re-engineering.

"People are innovating for themselves," he said. "That's what has happened and economists are really puzzled about it because economists are focused on this IP-based system."

Look at mash-ups for google maps, pimp my ride/house/pc etc etc, the people take over! Be your own innovator!

What all these analysts above are missing is that most of true product innovation is that new concepts, product ideas and enhancements are born out of frustration with the current product or lack of a solution to a particular problem in the market.

I never believed in R&D depts as the biggest innovators.. no siree, the one-man-bands that stumble upon something, or over something.. for the 1000st time and then decide to finaly do something about it.. those are the innovators and mostly by chance.

Thousands of entrepreneurs behind small, fast-growing companies are showing that good ideas, energy, and luck can overcome typically European burdens on entrepreneurship such as high taxation and heavy regulation" and " For the first time European governments -- from pro-business Netherlands (yeah right..!!) and Ireland to even the more state-heavy economies of France and Germany -- are starting to think seriously about how to unshackle the potential of these kinds of growth companies.

For example, Germany's Saarland, a region dotted with abandoned coal mines and foundries, is encouraging local university scientists to commercialize their discoveries by providing cheap office space, access to lab equipment, and crash courses in business fundamentals.
France has dramatically cut down the time and red tape it takes to start a business, and is giving tax breaks to jeunes entrepreneurs indépendents. It's the same story in Britain, where corporate taxes for small business where cut to 19% from 23%.

Even with all the changes, Europe has much catching up to do. For one, entrepreneurship is not a cultural norm: There are only half the number of companies in Europe as in the U.S. relative to the population, according to the Global Entrepreneurship Monitor, a research consortium. "Young people in Europe don't get encouragement from family and friends if they want to become entrepreneurs," says Paul Reynolds, an economist at Florida State University "And even if a family wants to help, they don't know anyone who has been an entrepreneur. There just aren't many examples."

So to help entrepreneurship along : Come on Mum and Dad , don't buy everything for the little rascals, but have'm sell lemonade, trade cartoonmagazine’s, anything to encourage them to make their own money!
And all you high and mighty governmental officials, cut the bullshit reports for a change, get away from behind those desks and start earning your money by helping your local entrepreneurs: ( swap places for a day with them for starters!! ), really stimulate innovation, and DO something!

Update: I just recieved this idea from idea-a-day.com: Introduce a 'Success Class' to high schools. The class would teach kids how to start a business and run one effectively, pointing out where regular school subjects such as math, languages and science can help. The class might also identify what each kid is truly good at and devise coursework to encourage these skills....These orgs are doing it already! Great!

Fon Secures €18 Million from Skype, Sequoia & Google

FON today announced that it has secured €18 million funding from Index Ventures, Google, Sequoia Capital and Skype. The company also announced that Danny Rimer (Index Ventures), Mike Volpi (Cisco) Niklas Zennström and Janus Friis (Skype) joined the board.

Founded just three months ago by serial entrepreneur Martin Varsavsky, FON’s objective is to build a global WiFi network bottom up, with one million hot spots by 2010. To do this, FON users, or "foneros," are able to connect to the Internet via Fon WiFi hotspots provided by other foneros. For foneros, the development of the FON global network means they will be able to connect to the Internet safely and securely all around the globe. For service and application providers such as Skype and Google, the FON network makes their services more available. For ISPs, FON provides a way to expand their reach globally.

With a simple download-and-install approach, similar to Skype’s, FON is a secure “by-the-people, for-the-people” network. FON has registered 3,000 members since it went live with a beta of its service in November, 2005. The company plans to use its funding to grow the network of foneros and support the growth of WiFi worldwide, particularly in countries where broadband is currently unaffordable to most people.

FON will drive its revenue from a multi-tiered subscription model. Members sign up in one of three foneros categories: Linus, Bill or Alien.
Linuses share their home WiFi hotspot with the FON network and can use any FON hotspot for free.
Bill's share their WiFi hotspots with Alien members for a fee. Bills cannot roam the FON network for free.
Aliens pay to use the FON network on an as-needed basis. Fifty-percent of revenue generated from Aliens will be shared with Bills. Alien memberships are currently available on a free-trial basis.

“Aliens are at the heart of our business model,” said Varsavsky. “As we continue to grow, we will attract consumers for all three foneros categories and achieve our goal of creating a global WiFi nation. This is a great opportunity for ISP’s, bloggers, developers, early adopters, consumer electronics manufacturers and the ‘average Joe or Jane’ with a WiFi connection to make money by letting other foneros connect to the Net safely and simply.”

ISPs are already signing up to partner with FON. “As a leading ISP in Sweden, Glocalnet is happy to partner with FON .

FON has attracted the likes of some of the technology communities’ leading advocates. Last friday I came up with an idea for a new blogger tool. I build it this weekend and launched it on monday. I came up with this idea because I visit a lot of blogs and sometimes want to add a link to a page. We could mail the blogger, add a comment but we can't edit the page itself. What I build is a LinkCloud. It's a small space where visitors can add links democratically. Every link is added and when more than 20 link are added the one with the least clicks is overwritten. Links that receive more clicks grow bigger and become brighter. A LinkCloud is free and you can get one in a few seconds on the website. I'll add one to this page too.

Human Narrowcasting Unit

Had an idea for next gen narrowcasting: an intelligent mobile narrowcasting unit: a human being with a display.
Of course you can display all sorts of things on it;
Logos, advertisements, offers, slogans, guerrilla marketing stuff, sending smses to a certain number and have it displayed on the HNU.

You could also call this "Infiltration Narrowcasting" whereas this wil make it even narrower, considering people move in flocks and belong to groups that can be infiltrated with this-- its adaptability will make it a very strong form of marketing. A T-shirt remains 'passive'!

The Siemens product is not a "must", of course. Other types of displays can be used, but this material triggered my idea.

Back from les Blogs 2.0 in beautifull Paris, in a very peculiar kind of setting...Laptop galore! This is generation ME : Hello? Is anybody listening to ME..? Martin Varsavsky of Fon got attacked for deleting a comment on his blog (Duh!) and for not reacting enough on comments of users....yeah right! Bloggers are now Internet DJ's: They mix up words and articles, links and picts..hell, they even have their laptops stickered-up, just like the DJ flightcases..
A very interesting panel on web 2.0 and Venture Capital touched on a new development: the growing interest and investment of US based VC's in European startups and emerging companies.
I've said it before: it's happening again, the internet bubble! We see it happening in Sweden and now also in the US..hang on to your hat..it's gonna happen again! We learned our lesson, so this time be prepared, get your act together, put on your dancing shoes and go, go go!

Remember: Nothing is impossible, you can do anything you want...just go do it!

100$ Laptop for 3rd World Countries

The MIT Media Laboratory launched a prototype of its US$100 laptop last wednesday in Tunesia, Nicholas Negroponte, the lab’s chairman and co-founder came up with the idea. The facility has been working with industry partners to develop a notebook computer for use by children in primary and secondary education around the world, particularly in developing countries. The laptops should start appearing in volume in late 2006. Children in Brazil, Thailand, Egypt en Nigeria will get this laptop from NGO's and Governments.

“In emerging nations, the issue isn’t connectivity,” Negroponte said at the Emerging Technologies Conference on the Massachusetts Institute of Technology’s Cambridge campus Wednesday. “That’s not solved, but lots of people are working on it in Wi-Fi, 3G, 4G, etc. For education, the roadblock is laptops.” He and his colleagues believe that equipping all children in the world with their own laptop will greatly improve the level of education and help stimulate children to learn outside of school as well as in the classroom. Very cool intiative!

Update: Educ.ar the foundation Martin Varsavsky started with others in Argentina, announced that they will buy a 100 Million $ worth of these computers (once proven that they actually work) and have neighbors of poor schools allow school kids to pick them up. They will come bundled with Fon software to allow the kids to have free acces to the internet via wifi foneros in their nabourhood!

Martin Varsavsky yesterday launched FON, in Spain. This is his third telecom/internet company in that country of 44 million people. He started Jazztel in 1998, today Spain´s second largest publicly traded telecom operator and Ya.com, today Spain´s second largest internet site after Terra. But while Jazztel and Ya.com are very local, FON can be very global, like Skype. FON is the P2P of WIFI and Martin wants to find the best way to launch FON around Europe and the rest of the world. What is FON? Very simple. At FON they developed a software client that you download from the net and you install it in your wifi base station. At that moment your wifi gives you a password of your choice but starts accepting all the other passwords of all the other FON members. FON is based on the premise that with wifi now being 54MB on cable and DSL platforms of 1MB or more, wifi users are only taking advantage of 3% of their capacity on the average or in other words wasting 97% of their capacity. And that's what's wrong with the Dutch innovation climate...

Only 2 out of 10 Dutch Students is thinking about starting his/her own business. In the USA that's 6 out of 10. This according to professor Henk Volberda of RSM (Rotterdam School of Management, part of the Erasmus University).

Loek Hermans of MKB thinks the government should make working less attractive, that way becoming an entrepreneur will become more attractive. Seldom have I read such a stupid comment.

First of all the schools should start TEACHING about entrepreneurship. Second the government should make it easier to be an entrepreneur. Not the negative route, just take the positive one.

A friend of mine told me a story about him visiting the BrainStore in Biel, Switzerland- he just sort of invited himself and they welcomed him and he joined in the process of idea generation in quite a special way! Great amounts of people generated great amounts of ideas (7000+) in a couple of hours, in a very interesting setting, using very interesting techniques. I can't explain the entire process here, but wouldn't it be a nice idea if we would organize an excursion to the BrainStore?

Wegener has decided to stop the decrease in subscribers by doing innovation. Wow....

The initiatives are a.o. a newspaper for young people in Eindhoven (seems doomed from the start) and a regional newspaper in Gelderland. They see great opportunities in tabloid size papers. Wow.... That's innovative...

I especially like the comment on why subscribers cancel their subscription. "more people have debt, then you cancel your subscription easier" according to the CFO.

I have a good idea for them. Fire the current board and hire some people that actually know what the word innovation means.

BikeTag - don't lose that bike

It's a simple idea based on an interesting statistic: 1 million bikes get stolen in the Netherlands, per year. In Amsterdam about 70.000 bikes are 'found' by the police. Of those 70.000 bikes only 10% gets returned to it's rightfull owner. They sell the rest.

Based on the figures we decided to start a new project called BikeTag. At our website you can buy a tag for your bike with an unique number. What do you do when you meet someone new, be it business or private? Some of you will put the name of your new acquaintance in a search-engine. Some companies do this as well when getting into contact with potential business partners or employees. Are you happy with the results the engines yield? Did you check, recently, what information about you has found it's way into those wide open online spaces?

I propose a new business that will tend to building up your desired online presence. First we'll find out what can be found now. Then we will establish what you would like your online presence to say about you. Next we will 'insert' pieces by and about you in the relevant places. & of course try and remove online pieces of you that you would rather forget. (now here's where I think the company needs to have some whizz-hack-kids & we sure as hell need legal council...)

SLOW MONEY

Investment in innovative, high-risk projects should have a slow return, but no taxes. For instance, 60 % of the total revenue could be payable only to the grandchildren of the investor. In this way everyone would profit from developing sustainable products and services.

We urgently need creative ways to fund productive (now dead) projects such as the i3 project LiMe [www.i3net.org/i3projects/lime.html]. Such projects are helped by their multidisciplinary approach in the creative phase, but hindered by it in the end as no single party is able to develop it further. Above all, we need creative alliances that will accept a slow money return on investments in favour of a relatively stable and prosperous free market.

UnPimp My Ride

I just had coffee with Bram Alkema and we suddenly realized what the future of automobiles is going to look like. It's wikll be the era of UnPimping. Think about it: right now everybody wants his or her car to look like something you keep in a closet, behind glass and never touch because then you would have fingerprints on it. This is weird for a machine that you keep outside and drive arround with and which get's dirty no matter what you do. Cars shouldn't be shiny! Cars should be firm, lasting and durable. So this is what is going to happen: within a few years we will start seeing beautifull cars that have super strong and durable car paint that isn't shiny and which you can hardly scratch. And here's the best part: if you scratch it, it wil look good! You will say to people "I hit this structure so hard it actually scratched my paint!" and that will be cool. The bumpers won't be painted plastic but big Blob like rubber structures. Kind of like the taxis in New York but then good looking. You will go to a bar and brag about a new dent in the front of your car from a tree you hit while parking. The future isn't shiny, it's UnPimped...

No. Minister Bot (foreign affairs) could be joining a genuine VC (he is named as a potential partner in Gilde and Atlas) after his career as a minister. Reference is made to Colin Powell who recently joined Kleiner Perkins. Their international network and lobby capabilities are worth it for the VC's.

Guess it could be worse. Maybe if these kinds of people join the Dutch VC world, the government would take VC's and starting companies more serious.

Not all squats are the same, neither are the squatters. Undeniably however it was the lenient political climate of the eighties that launched our now two biggest (new) media labs V2 and De Waag . V2 comes from a squat in Den Bosch, de Waag originated from the Digital City, the same well from which also sprung xs4all. We don't have an MIT Dublin fiasco where 30 million pounds went down the drain. We don't have an IVREA that is forced to merge with Domus with will bring only more stuff and more eyecandy into a thing infested world. Our labs are not hosted by mummified academic departments. No we have a unique blend of a creative, lively and integrated scene. Why? Because we let young people with some sense of public domain (not where and how fast do I get the latest BMW) in peace for a while. Now we're up against the same ? situation (might be radically different, but who knows?) The Pick up Club has squatted the huge ABN AMRO building right smack down in the middle of town it looks like the perfect dream to host cultural economies of the sme size.

So this morning I looked at our thermometer to see how hot it was outside. It was 19 degrees celcius outside. Then I realized that that number didn't tell me what I wanted to know: what should I wear today? Coat or no coat? T-Shirt or sweater? I thought about that for a few minutes and then came up with a simple thermometer improvement. A clothing index card to place next to your thermometer. It shows you what people generely wear when it's 19 degrees celcius outside. That way, I can look at the temperature, look it up on my index and dress accordingly.

At the previous Ideabroker meeting in the WTC, Rotterdam, I realized how much effort 'them Ideabroker peeps' (JK most visibly) invest into organizing things, stimulating innovation, gathering people, keeping the juices flowing, helping and connecting.
As an identity designer I felt the urge to be giving back some of that good ol' energy,most logically in the form of a logo design and while I was at it, I also designed a new look and feel for the weblog. (And some business cards ;-)

Anyone outthere who also likes to help and would be willing to tweak the code of this weblog and help integrate the new design into the exisiting weblog?

Idea for banks

As Jan Karel stated on the last Ideabroker event in Rotterdam, Ideabroker is meant to share ideas. Specially the ones you are not planning to use yourself or not capable of implementing yourself anyway. So here is one I would love to see, simply because I'm getting a little sick of it.

It has to do with customer friendly banking (I know, I won't hold my breath). But I recently got my new credit card. And it now has a.... PIN number. Yet another PIN number... This means I cannot pay with my signature anymore and I will have to remember this number, yet another one. Now I don't know if this has changed, but last time I tried it was impossible to change the PIN of a credit card, so I can use one code for more cards. So now for my idea, that I would love the banks to introduce. An all in one card. My PIN (normal bank card) just gets the 12 or 16 numbers on the front so I can make internet payments, and it's all done. No more different credit and bank card, no more different PIN numbers, just one customer friendly card.

So there it is, now let's hope we have people from the financial sector reading this blog.

Today an interview with Jaap van Duyn (Robeco Chief Investment Officer) in De volkskrant. His statement is simple: we're too rich. From a historical perspective we're in the same situation as the 18th century. After our golden age, we fell back and went into a 100 year recession. The wage of a carpenter in 1780 was the same as in 1680. Why? Because we were the best, and we got lazy. The Dutch financed the industrial revolution, but hardly profited from it.

He also complains about the management culture. The salaries are way too high, and that's because RvC's don't have financial gain in salary negotiations with top management. We need more entrepreneurs, less managers. His solution: education. The only thing you can honestly influence.

I know it's not common policy to "promote" articles or websites here. But I just wrote an article (in Dutch) on a flexible working environment. And I mean on a national scale. Many arguments are always given that we cannot fire people easy enough, and that that's bad for innovation.
Well, there are several views on this, and if I read that 33% of all employees changed job in the period 2000-2002 (not the best economic times here in the Netherlands), it seems we are pretty flexible. Or are we? And do these people that changes jobs, mostly young and highly educated professionals, not hamper innovation as well, by changing so much and so fast?

The latest, longest, loudest and most interactive Ideabroker sofar, happened at OpenBC's Euromeet in Rotterdam Thursday last . With 8 pitchers attending, of whom 6 where actually in the race, we started with our two time winner Simon den Uijl from Epyon who set the pace.. and ended with Gamica's Bart Groothuijzen. Jury and Public Winner was PCA Mobile's Patrick Rodijk;he won a bottle of Fizz, some consulting and insulting hours from Result Strategy (thanks Jan Karel) and Lunatech (thanks Keith) and a 2 year subscription to OpenBC! (thanks Bob). Second Place was for Bas van de Haterd from MysteryMailer and third for Maurice Brand of Re-turn. Fourth came Nathaniel Stott from Luchtnet, and a shared fifth place for last minute entry Mathijs van Zutphen of Direct Democracy and Robbert van Geldrop from BackupAgent with Jack Snijders of Easy Sport Diving closing the ranks. The jury had a tough time and whilst discussing the winners there was a public voting going on in the Ideabroker Arena thanks to the cool equipment of our hosts Digital Port! It was very, very late when the noise died down and all went home.. Hosted by Syntens this time, (thanx Jeroen van Ieperen !) and organized by our very own Bas van de Haterd (thanx dude!) we had a blast! 25 People attending and 6 brave young souls with inspiring ideas presented their case. A surprising mix of very different ideas passed the stage. But before the pitches we had an inspiring presentation about entrepreneurship and networking from Prof Wim Hulsink of the Erasmus and Wageningen University who's ending statement: "the endless Sea" you'll find below. Needless to say we had winners and runners up , there are no losers at Ideabroker's: If you got the courage to present your idea in front of those hungry Elfs and Trolls that made up this time's jury, men you've got balls! Kudos to all! The Saints took our first price: a (hand-nicked by Bas) precious bottle of red from the cellars of Dad van de Haterd (thanx Dad) plus a 2year subscription to OpenBC (thanx Bob!) with their mobile game presentation, second prize was taken by Usersown with their route related dinner service optimization tool "Uplan", a shared third place by Albumservice.com-online album printing and Innergy's Creation's the Bizz Buzz-a lowcost narrow casting employment initiative. Runners up where Gamepoints with their concept for a new in-shop game platform at your local snackbar, and Eyegate with their LCD in shop advertising solution for small businesses. It was sooo good this time, that even long after Syntens closed the doors at 22h, half the crowd lingered on, in heated and/or inspired discussions on the doorstep, without anything to drink!!!

Read this article about "top dividends" (in Dutch), and of course my reaction on HRlog.nl. New PC

I recently bought a new PC and once again I found myself losing a lot of stuff I didn't even know I ever installed. Simple things like codecs for media players, stuff like that.

Would it be possible to create a program that simply goes trough everything that's installed at your PC, asks you if you want to take it along to your new PC / new install and if yes, burns it to a CD (possible multiple volume) and then installs it all in the new settings. So not just files and documents (or better: no files or documents), but program's, add-on's, plug-ins, etc.

To all you creative programmers: that's a challenge that would make the lives of many people easier.

3rd Ideabroker event @ Sogyo de Bilt

Our 3rd event in a nice and cozy setting @ Sogyo de Bilt was again different from earlier ones. Smaller, around 25-30 people attending , no BBQ because of weather conditions but instead a great buffet (thanks guys!) a colorful range of entrepreneurs to match the new bright interior of Sogyo. Good discussions, great product ideas, a surprise "love it or leave it" T-shirt gift and new secret investors scanning the grounds. Ofcourse we had a instant jury and not so instant winners: This time Simon den Uyl of Epyon won a guaranteed order of his fast charger product once released, for all of Sogyo's laptops! as well as a bottle of cheap wine and a t-shirt! Runner up was the surprise of the day: Not so young Robert Pachowski with his 'Bookarrest' a foldeable Bookrest in super space-age highlight material! 3rd came Jan Louwers from Uphill Battle with cool Fotopo: mapping with pictures and known for the SMS-wave product! Also pitching were: Sander Hoeke from InfoCaster with a Xtreme Rapid Prototyping idea, Thijmen Vos from Innovista Security with a new camera idea and Harrie Flinsenberg from Whirlwind Services who wants to give communication a spin with his total communication solution. All in all another great and inspiring evening! Thanx everybody, and especially Wilco Verdoold Sogyo's Director for hosting us!

The Ernst & Young ICT monitor shows that ICT spendings are increasing, but is worried that if these increasing expenditures will not have results in productivity, they will soon decrease again.

Ernst & Young puts the blame at the customer side. They say customers' expectations are too high. One could of course also argue that the ICT companies deliver too little. A big market opens for ICT companies with a satisfaction guarantee.

This morning I was planning on relaxing a bit. But at 9:05 I got nervous and jumped on my bike to get to the office for just a few hours of work. Then I realized there is a global conspiracy to keep me addicted to work. They are after me, I'm sure! Why else develop the Blackberry? Now I'm hooked. I can't live without it. When I'm talking to someone and I hear the soft 'bleep bleep' in my pocket I slowly start to panic. My hands start sweating, my head is spinning, I see black spots and I just have to see what message I got. My girlfriend asks me to come to bed around 12 at night and I answer 'yeah sure, just let me finish this one thing. It will only be a few minutes, I swear'. It's pathetic! I imagine myself in 10 years. Waering an old suit, standing in front of the supermarket saying 'can you spare some change, I'm hungry' and people saying' yeah sure, you ain't hungry, you want to invest!'. And I'll go 'No I swear, I'll just buy a sandwich'. And then, when I got a few euro's I'll run of to one of those networking events and give my money to the first Entrepreneur who hands me a sweat deal and I'll be happy for a few minutes. But then I have to go off and find me a new fix. Another fresh meeting, maybe do a little deal somewhere, finish just one last tiny website.

Two researchers of the TU Delft recently discovered that a flexible "employee market", like America and Canada have, where it's easy to fire people, isn't good for economic growth. The current ideas are that you will sooner hire someone if it's easier to fire them again and because of that, your company will grow faster.

However, this study shows that countries with lots of employee protection sustain a larger growth then those who do not. There are two reasons for this.
1) Employees are more eager to share knowledge when they have job security.
2) You need less managers to keep them in line (about 50% less).

I still wonder how the research can have these results, looking at the economic growth of the USA and Canada vs Europe. The idea however is... Interesting.

Modern urban experience is built on window shopping. But window displays are brighthy lit, temporary graveyards of immovable goods without interactivity. The Interactive window offers a difference. It invites window shoppers to interact with a virtual person in the window by mobile phone. A projection of a model in real lifesize. Hundreds of video sequences are used to make the model appear alive. If a viewer passes a movement sensor, a video sequence is played getting the viewers' attention by using voice sound, gestures or signs and he or she is encouraged to interact via mobile phone. The virtual model is answering and asking viewers what they would like to see. Are there too little good bèta students and engineers in The Netherlands, or not? This article shows that it's doubtful. On the one hand, everybody complains. On the other hand... The pay sucks and hasn't gone up.

Technical innovation is done by good bèta's. However, maybe we have enough bèta's, just not enough excellent ones... So maybe the problem lies in the type of students, not the numbers. Just my two cents.

IMF shows us the way

The IMF stated that the Dutch laws on the subject of laying off people are a menace to the innovative power. The Dutch innovation platform should put this on their agenda. It's not the first time this has been said, and it's pretty much stating the obvious, but who dares to carry this one?
